Modern medicine in Korea began here 140 years ago. Today, cancer is being treated here with heavy-ion technology.
The KIUT delegation visited Yonsei University Severance Hospital in South Korea.
Founded in 1885, Severance holds a special place in Korean medical history as the country’s first modern Western-style hospital. Today, that legacy continues through oncology, robotic surgery, precision medicine and advanced medical technologies.
One of the highlights of the visit was the Heavy Ion Therapy Center, Korea’s first radiotherapy center using carbon ions. The technology allows tumors to be targeted with high precision while reducing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
Severance also has extensive experience in bringing medical innovation into clinical practice — from robotic surgery to advanced cancer treatment.
For KIUT, the visit was an opportunity to see first-hand how medical education, research and clinical practice work together within a single system
